This course teaches students how to write better creative essays for the national essay contest submission. Our teacher guides the students to turn a blank sheet of paper into a teeming concert of voices and music and change how they and their readers think of the world and its inhabitants. The course covers critical literature terms and devices by studying creative winning essays and then get a chance to try students’ own hands at writing new creative pieces from a select number of prompts. Throughout the course, the students will have the opportunity to workshop their drafts and get feedback on their work, working towards more polished versions that meet the standard of the prestigious Scholastic Writing Contest award.

Last year, Sugar Land SpiderSmart Students won a total of 64 awards, including national gold and silver medals, and regional gold key awards in the Scholastic National Writing Contests, the nation's most prestigious recognition program for young writers in grades 7–12.

Such awards demonstrate students' high-level writing skills and add a heavyweight to their resumes, boosting their advantages when applying to private high schools or colleges. This class also helps students better "tell" their stories to the private high school or college administration officers in their essays to strengthen their application status.
