Sugar Land, Texas — SpiderSmart at Sugar Land students today received recognition for a year of extraordinary creativity and diligent work in writing. The Alliance for Young Artist and Writers just announced the regional winners of the 2021 Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. This prestigious competition is the nation’s longest-running recognition program for teens.

Among the winners were more than 15 SpiderSmart at Sugar Land students who carefully crafted a wide variety of writing — from critical essays to personal narratives to poems — during our 2020 Summer Camp.

2020 was a year clouded by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it did not limit our students’ tremendous growth. Professionally-trained teachers worked closely with students to develop their writing into competition-quality work. This involved paying attention to style, curating the flow, and maintaining a consistent voice.

This meticulous work paid off: our students received 44 awards in total — 11 Gold Key, 17 Silver Key, and 16 Honorable Mention. “I’m so incredibly proud of each one of our students who decided to attend this competition, “ said Sharon Li, SpiderSmart at Sugar Land’s director. “They put remarkable effort into every aspect of their submissions.”
