Polar Bears

Sicely W. (rising 4th grader)

Imagine looking at a giant creature who lives in the cold, freezing arctic and has fur as white as pure snow, big paws, and strong, sharp claws. It is an Ursus Maritimes polar bear. Polar bears eat healthy, fatted food to stay warm. They have unique adaptations that help them survive in the cold weather. Eventually, polar bears have become endangered. Polar bears are a very special type of animal. First and foremost, polar bears eat different kinds of food. Their favorite food is ringed and bearded seal. They eat seals because seals provide lots of fat and blubber for polar bears to stay warm. Polar bears need about 2 kg of fat per day to have enough energy to survive in the arctic, and ringed seals provide 55 kg of fat that could provide up to eight days of energy for the polar bears. If they cannot find any seals, they eat berries or reindeers. Berries give polar bears healthy nutrients and vitamins. Reindeers have lots of fur to stay warm, so if polar bears eat reindeers, the reindeers’ energy is passed on to the polar bears. Polar bears also eat fish like salmon. The fish provides meat and nutrients for polar bears too. Polar bears are predators to lots of animals. Furthermore, polar bears have interesting adaptations. In the arctic, it is important to stay warm, so polar bears have two layers of fur, and one very thick layer of fat to keep warm in the arctic. Polar bears’ paws have two very important jobs that help polar bears. Paws help polar bears walk on slippery ice. Their claws help polar bears walk in the slippery ice too. The claws can grip the ice, so they won’t slip and slide all over the place. Also, the paws help polar bears swim. The front paws’ role is to act like paddles while the hind paws act like rudders. The polar bears’ white fur helps them blend in too. That way, when they hunt, their prey won’t be aware of them, and then the polar bears will sneak in behind them. These adaptations really help polar bears. However, polar bears are being threatened in their very own habitat because of us. In the summer, ice melts very fast, and in the end, there are only small ice pieces for the polar bears to walk and sit on. Even though polar bears can swim, they can only swim in a very short period of time. Also, during the summer, polar bears cannot find that much food, so they starve to death. These bears mainly spend much of their time on big bodies of ice, so they are not experienced with small chunks of ice. Every summer day, polar bears just sit patiently and are confused on small pieces of ice just waiting if there is any food. Sometimes, the ice is so small that only one polar bear that stands on it can fit in the ice! Also, it is getting warmer in the arctic. Conditions and climates are both changing. Polar bears are getting overheated very easily. These are all bad changes for the polar bears during the summer, which causes them to starve and die. In addition, there are many ways we can help to save polar bears. We can help polar bears by adopting them for a month. Also, we have to stop polluting gases from burning fossil fuels. We can stop driving electric cars, or do not drive cars from time to time, and walk or ride our bikes to places more often. Sometimes, we can be together and use one car to drive to different places, so we don’t use that much fossil fuels. That way, the arctic will start getting cooler, and ice won’t be melting that fast for the polar bears. Together, we can make a difference to help polar bears. To conclude, polar bears are a very interesting type of animal. The food that they eat helps them stay healthy and warm. Polar bears’ ways of surviving in the cold arctic are very different from other animals. They are endangered, and we do not want them to go extinct because it is going to be so sad. To solve this problem, we must take action and try to save this white, patient, enchanted creature!
