A Fear of Rollercoasters

Taiwan F. (rising 5th grader)

The moment I stepped out of the car, my instincts told me that today might not go as well as I had thought it would. My stomach lurched at the sight of the towering roller coaster, with people screaming their brains out. It looked like the roller coaster was trying to kill the passengers. I hate roller coasters because of my fear of heights. I always shiver as I look down from a balcony, but at least I feel my feet planted on solid ground. My day at Seaworld was off to a sour start, confirmed by my brother coaxing me into confronting the fall of death. “I don’t want to do it.” My eight year old self whined while looking up at the big, blue roller coaster called Manta. With all of its twists, turns, loops, and drops, it looked terrifying. “Just once.” He pleaded, looking as though he was about to fall to his knees and beg me to say yes. I hesitated one moment wondering whether I should trust my brother. I don't get along very well with him. You know, just the occasional try-to-choke-your-brother-to-death-with-some-dental-floss kind of relationship. I thought about it for a moment. It couldn’t be that bad could it? “Fine.” I muttered, half regretting I had even let the word boil up in my stomach and gurgle out of my mouth A couple of minutes later, we were in the seats of the dizzy-looking roller coaster called Manta, aka, the roller coaster of guaranteed doom. All of a sudden, the seats turned ninety-degrees.I was suddenly thankful for the thick plastic belt-like thing that kept me from falling to the ground. Suddenly, the roller coaster spit to life. Up, up, up we went! We sailed to the highest point in the roller coaster and then… WHOOSH! We zooed so fast that I could feel my heartbeat! Left! Right! Down! Left! A big loop!... We went through loops and turns and drops. It turned out to be a fantastic sensation The rest of the day was a blur of roller coasters and fun. My brother and I were on the scary looking roller coasters for almost the entire day! I never knew I would like something that made toy trains look like a grain of sand next to the Empire State building. We would never have left the roller coasters if not for our parents who tore us away, but we always snuck back to them. Throughout the day, I learned something too. The best things can come from new experiences that may appear to be the worst, you just never know until you try.
